Exceptionally high radiation levels found in Koriyama, Fukushima Prefecture

June 6, 2012 – JAPAN – 6/2/2012, contamination level of elementary and junior high school was measured in Koriyama Fukushima. The dosimeter calculates Bq/cm2. It is converted to Bq/m2 by multiplied by 10^4. It is the total of cesium 134 and 137. Koriyama is located approximately 34 miles (55 km) west of Fukushima Daiichi. –Fukushima Diary

1. In Kiev, only cesium 137 was measured.
2. In Koriyama, it was measured on concrete.

(UPDATED) #Fukushima Reactor 4 SFP Secondary Cooling System Motor Burned Out

(UPDATE 2) TEPCO restarted the cooling after 6PM on June 6, using the backup system (which was not broken by the way). The SFP water temperature had risen to 42 degrees Celsius.

(UPDATE) It may take 3 days before TEPCO can fix the problem (wires not insulated well) in the backup motor. The rise in temperature of the SFP water is expected to be 0.3 degrees Celsius per hour, so in 3 days the temperature of the SFP water may rise by 21.6 degrees to 56.6 degrees Celsius (as the current temperature is 35 degrees Celsius, as tweeted by Councilwoman Kuniko Tanioka, who obtained the information by calling the NISA).

The results showed that Cs-137 counts in children given pectin-powder were reduced by an average of 62%, whereas the average reduction in those children given only placebo powder was only 13.9 %. The difference was significant at less than 1 % level. The reduction was medically significant, as no child in the placebo group reached values below 20 Bq/kg body weight, which is considered by Bandazhevsky as potentially associated with specific pathological tissue damages.

Among the children living in the contaminated areas, 70 to 90 % of the children had Cs-137 exceeding 15-20 Bq/kg body weight. In many villages, the levels reached 200-400 Bq/kg; the highest values were measured in Narovlya district with 6 700-7 300 Bq/kg. As shown by Bandazhevsky, the chronic accumulation of Cs-137 contributed to progressive deterioration of health [7, 8].

In a second study published in 2007 carried out by the BELRAD and the Research Centre Jülich in Germany, a joint data-base was created to include all available data from previous measurements at both research institutes and evaluated to identify settlements with potentially enhanced radiation burdens. Serial measurements of the Cs body burden were then performed at those settlements. The new data for 17 000 children were used to evaluate the actual situation with special attention to the critical group – the 10 % in age group 1-19 y with the highest dose. These children were recruited into further investigations on the effectiveness of different treatments including apple pectin to reduce the Cs-137 burdens in the body.

Although total annual doses for most of nearly 17 000 children assessed in 2002-2003 were generally below 1 mSv (the international exposure limit, approximately equivalent to 1 308 780 Bq), there are still cases where the limit is exceeded merely due to a high ingestion dose. This calls for remedial measures for agricultural land and the use of clean food and control of food contamination.

Violent fluctuations of hydrogen concentration in reactor1

Hydrogen concentration of reactor 1 has been fluctuating violently since 6/3/2012.

On the daily press conference of 6/4/2012, Tepco explained hydrogen gas is heterogeneous inside of PCV, the indicator captured the mass of high concentration by chance.

However, it dropped once on 6/9 and it picked up on 6/10 again.

There are 2 indicators for hydrogen concentration, system A and B. Both are in the same trend.

If hydrogen concentration goes over 4% (Oxygen 5%), there is the possibility of hydrogen explosion. Tepco is injecting nitrogen to control the hydrogen concentration.

1,000 US High School Students to Do Volunteer Cleanup, Tree-Planting in #Fukushima, Miyagi, Iwate, Ibaraki and Observe Japan's Recovery


Following the footsteps of the students from Middle Tennessee State University, 1,000 high school students from across the United States will be volunteering in the disaster affected Tohoku, in Fukushima, Miyagi, Iwate, and Ibaraki Prefectures. Activities will include clean-up and planting trees, according to the Japanese government foundation who invited them.

1,000 U.S. high school students to start volunteer work in tsunami zones

Around 1,000 high school students and youths from the United States will visit the Tohoku region in three groups from Sunday to carry out volunteer work in four disaster-hit prefectures at the invitation of the Japan Foundation.

Each group will stay in the country for a fortnight and engage in various exchanges with locals in Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima and Ibaraki prefectures, according to the foundation, which specializes in cultural exchanges.

Participants in the program will come from 40 schools across the United States, including areas affected by natural disasters in the past, including Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The last group will arrive in late July.

Some of the students are from the former schools of two young American teachers killed by the March 2011 tsunami — Taylor Anderson from Virginia and Montgomery Dickson from Alaska — who were teaching English at schools in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, and Rikuzentakata in Iwate. Those students will visit both cities, which were devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake.

All those taking part will also visit Kobe to witness the city's recovery from the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake.


The above Japan Times article doesn't say much about the students' activities beyond "cultural exchanges", but the Foundation's press release does.

Kyodo News (Japanese) had a PR press release from the Japan Foundation, a government corporation under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in April this year announcing the event. According to the PR release the project is called "Kizuna strengthening project". The high school students from all over the US will visit Miyagi, Iwate, Fukushima, Ibaraki, and stay for 2 weeks and do volunteer works (cleaning, planting trees, etc.) and mix with local residents in various activities to experience how the recovery is taking place. The first batch of students will stay in the region from June 10 to 23, the second batch from July 1 to 14, and the third (and the last) one from July 8 and 21.

The Foundation and the ministry behind the Foundation are hoping that these young impressionable students will return to the US and start disseminating the positive, happy images of Japan's wonderful recovery from the earthquake and tsunami disaster of March 11, 2011 to "counter baseless rumors and further the understanding of the situation in Japan by the US citizens" (my translation, from their PR piece).

I almost forgot - this "Kizuna strengthening project" will invite the total 10,000 high school and college students from the US and Asia-Pacific region over 1 year period.

For your information, the original meaning of "kizuna" in Japanese is a "rope that ties down the legs of a horse so that it cannot escape". Some say it is to tie down a cow.
